May 15, 2026 - A new trial has found that participating in a structured rapid weight loss program results in significantly greater weight loss at one year compared to a gradual weight loss approach. The study, published by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), challenges the prevailing belief that slow and steady gradual weight loss is necessary to prevent weight regain and reduce obesity-related complications.

Among adults with obesity, participation in a rapid weight loss program resulted in an average one-year percent total body weight loss (%TBWL) of -14.4%, compared to -10.5% for those following a gradual weight loss approach. The rapid weight loss group also achieved higher rates of achieving clinically meaningful BMI and WHtR targets.

Key Findings: Rapid weight loss resulted in significantly greater weight loss at one year. A larger proportion of participants undergoing rapid weight loss compared to gradual weight loss achieved key body weight targets associated with reduced obesity-related health risks. The findings support the potential of effective, commercially available weight-reduction programs for reducing the growing burden on public healthcare systems.

Dr. Johnson concludes, "Our results clearly challenge the prevailing belief that slow and steady gradual weight loss is necessary to prevent weight regain and reduce obesity-related complications."

The study was conducted by researchers at EASO in collaboration with a team of medical professionals from various institutions. The findings are significant given the urgent need for effective weight-loss strategies.
