Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi has issued a strong warning against any unilateral attempt by India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). In an interview with APP, he the treaty is an internationally agreed-upon agreement that cannot be unilaterally revoked. Hashmi emphasized that if India were to block the flow of the Indus River, it would ultimately cause greater harm to its own interests.
Hashmi pointed out that the IWT has been in place for decades and acknowledges the historical significance of the river's natural course. He no one can stop the natural flow of water, adding that such an action would be self-defeating. The governor further there is a defined international procedure for withdrawing from treaties like the IWT, which includes specific mechanisms for review or termination under certain circumstances.
Hashmi highlighted that India currently lacks the legal standing to seek a review of the treaty and stressed that any attempt to block water flows would not only harm India but also have wider global implications. Addressing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, Hashmi advised him to act wisely, carefully read the treaty, and make an effort to understand the historical and geographical context of the region.
Furthermore, Governor Hashmi underscored the importance of Pakistan's energy transition in combating climate change and smog crises. He emphasized that this transition is vital for the country’s sustainable development and environmental protection.
