Adrien Brody has opened up about his decision to live alone in a hotel room for five months while preparing for his Broadway debut in "The Fear of 13." In an interview with Interview magazine published on May 15, the 53-year-old American actor and visual artist shared that he chose this solitary period to better understand his character Nick Yaris.
"Of course it is lonesome," Brody said. "But I'm playing a man who has lived far deeper in that isolation. What I experience is only scratching the surface." He while staying alone was necessary for the role, it also stemmed from his own life experiences and the stories he wanted to honor through Nick's journey.
Brody elaborated, "It doesn't just come from the responsibility of these four or five months; it comes from the life I've lived up to this point, from accessing those experiences and honoring the people reflected in Nick's story and journey." He living alone for nearly half a year each week was an integral part of his preparation. Despite describing it as "a strange thing," Brody emphasized its necessity for roles like this.
"I have done it before, and I will do it again," he quipped. These experiences not only hone one's work but also lead to a greater appreciation of life.
Brody plays the role of Nick Yaris in "The Fear of 13," based on a true story about a man wrongfully incarcerated for 22 years on death row, who was later exonerated. His Broadway run will continue through July 12.
Despite the solitary experience, Brody found it crucial to fully immerse himself into his character's isolation and responsibility. This sacrifice allowed him to better portray Nick Yaris' emotional depth and resilience in the face of injustice.
