Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Masood Malik to ensure advance preparations for the upcoming monsoon season across Pakistan. The prime minister also instructed authorities to further strengthen the early warning system and ensure continuous monitoring of high-risk areas vulnerable to natural disasters, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
During a meeting on Wednesday, Dr. Musadik Malik briefed the prime minister about the government’s preparedness for the forthcoming monsoon season. The minister also apprised the prime minister of the progress and performance of early warning systems installed in mountainous regions to monitor Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and flash floods.
“With the onset of the monsoon, it is crucial that we remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions,” Prime Minister Sharif said. “We must ensure that our early warning systems are robust and capable of providing timely alerts to high-risk areas.”
Dr. Musadik Malik highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring and maintenance of these systems to enhance their effectiveness in predicting and mitigating natural disasters during the monsoon season.
“Early detection can make a significant difference in saving lives and minimizing property damage,” he added.
The prime minister’s directive comes as authorities across Pakistan are preparing for what is expected to be an active monsoon season, with heavy rainfall forecasted in several regions. The government has been working on enhancing its disaster management capabilities through various initiatives aimed at improving early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms.
“This proactive approach will help us better prepare for the challenges that come with the monsoon,” said Dr. Musadik Malik. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens during this critical period.”
