PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari discusses the potential for Karachi to boost Pakistan’s defence production at a ceremony, highlighting concerns over economic strain and regional conflicts.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), addressed an inauguration ceremony in Karachi on May 22, 2026. During his remarks, he emphasized the importance of securing a prominent role for the city in Pakistan’s defense production sector.

According to Bilawal, nations often prioritize battle-tested military hardware when it comes to their national security needs. He expressed concern about the economic strain that might arise from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and other regions.

“With escalating tensions across the region, there is a pressing need for Pakistan to strengthen its own defense capabilities,” said Bhutto-Zardari. “Karachi has the potential to play a significant role in this effort by becoming a hub for defense production.”

The PPP chief also warned that peace negotiations alone would not suffice to address these challenges. He called for comprehensive economic reforms and investment in key sectors, including defense manufacturing.

“While dialogue is essential, we must also focus on practical measures such as boosting domestic industries,” he added. “This includes supporting companies in Karachi and other parts of the country that can contribute to our nation’s security.”

Bilawal's come at a time when Pakistan faces multiple geopolitical pressures and economic challenges. The inauguration ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, a new road project in Karachi.

The PPP chairman’s remarks highlight the party's commitment to national development and its vision for a stronger, more resilient Pakistan. As tensions continue to rise globally, Bhutto-Zardari’s call for increased defense production underscores the importance of domestic manufacturing capabilities in ensuring the country's security and economic stability.
