ABU DHABI: An Emirati court has sentenced a man to three years in prison and fined him AED5 million ($1.37 million) for posting a social media video that authorities claimed encouraged marriages involving underage girls in Morocco, according to local news reports.
The court found the defendant guilty of disseminating false information and promoting illegal activities through his online post, which was widely shared on various platforms. The video allegedly featured individuals advocating for marriage to minors in Morocco, an act that is strictly prohibited under both UAE and Moroccan laws.
"This case highlights the serious consequences of spreading misinformation and encouraging harmful practices," said a spokesperson from the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court. "The defendant's actions not only violated local laws but also endangered the well-being of vulnerable communities."
The court emphasized that such videos can have severe repercussions, including legal penalties and social stigma for those involved in underage marriages.
"This is a clear message to all individuals who engage in or promote activities that harm others," added the spokesperson. "We will continue to take stringent measures against anyone found guilty of such offenses."
