England's legendary all-rounder Andrew Flintoff set to become Sydney Thunder's new fielding coach, following Trevor Bayliss' departure.
England's legendary all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is poised to take on a significant role in Big Bash League (BBL) as he is expected to be named the franchise's fielding coach. According to an international cricket news website report, this move comes after Thunder parted ways with Trevor Bayliss, who had been their head coach for five years, including leading them to the final of the 2024-25 BBL season.
Following Bayliss' departure, Thunder's general manager, Trent Copeland, expressed a desire for a "world-class T20 coach" and has reportedly identified Flintoff as the ideal candidate. The 48-year-old former England all-rounder has been coaching England Lions, the national team's A side, for the past year. Additionally, he has served as a consultant to England's white-ball squads during Matthew Mott's tenure as head coach.
Despite his experience in international cricket, Flintoff lacks significant experience in franchise T20 cricket. Both of his previous stints with Northern Superchargers were in the previous editions of The Hundred. Moreover, Flintoff’s involvement with the England Lions may impact his availability at the start of the next BBL season, as the team is scheduled to tour South Africa for three one-day games and two four-day matches in December.
The report also highlights that Flintoff's first decision upon joining Thunder could involve the captaincy future of Australia's David Warner. Warner was recently charged with drink driving and is expected to plead guilty at his next hearing on June 24th.
