Haripur police allegedly tortured several transgender protesters during a rights rally on GT Road, resulting in injuries and arrests.
The Haripur police faced criticism after reportedly torturing transgender individuals during a protest organized by the community. The transgender activists had gathered near the Karakoram Highway to advocate for their rights. They blocked the road and raised slogans against perceived police harassment, complaining that restrictions were being imposed on them. Specifically, they alleged that the police were preventing them from organizing entertainment programs, which they claimed led to job losses.
When the protestors refused to comply with the police order, the authorities resorted to using force in compliance with Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which had been enforced across Murree. The police employed a baton charge to disperse the protesters, leading to injuries on both sides. Two transgender persons and some police personnel were reportedly hurt during the clash.
The injured individuals were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Additionally, several transgender activists were arrested and transferred to the city police station. This incident has drawn attention to ongoing issues faced by the transgender community in Pakistan regarding their rights and safety during public demonstrations.
