Pakistan and UN-Habitat initiate a consultative process for the country's first-ever National Urban Strategy to build climate-resilient cities.

The government of Pakistan, in collaboration with UN-Habitat Pakistan, has launched a consultative process aimed at developing a National Urban Strategy. This strategy is designed to address growing urban vulnerabilities linked to climate change and build resilient cities. The initiative was kickstarted during a high-level national workshop jointly organized by the Ministry of Climate Change.

The consultation process will involve various stakeholders including government officials, experts from academia and civil society organizations, as well as representatives from local governments. The goal is to gather input and feedback on key areas such as urban planning, infrastructure development, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable resource management that are critical for building resilient cities in the face of climate change.

The first phase of the consultation process will focus on identifying the main challenges facing Pakistan's urban areas and understanding the needs of different stakeholders. This information will be used to develop a comprehensive strategy that can guide future urban development policies and investments.

UN-Habitat, which is part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been actively involved in supporting national urban strategies around the world. The organization brings extensive experience in planning for sustainable cities and has worked with numerous countries on developing similar strategies to enhance resilience against climate impacts.

The launch of this consultation process marks a significant step towards creating more resilient urban environments in Pakistan, ensuring that growing populations can thrive while also protecting them from the adverse effects of changing climatic conditions. As part of broader efforts to address urban challenges and promote sustainable development, this strategy aims to foster inclusive growth and improve living standards for all citizens.

The consultation process is expected to continue over several months with regular updates on progress made towards developing the National Urban Strategy. The final document will serve as a roadmap for policymakers and planners to guide long-term urban planning and investment decisions in Pakistan's cities.
