LUMS Energy Institute (LEI) recently organized a one-day workshop titled "Training Media Personnel on Power Sector Fundamentals" at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The event aimed to enhance journalists' understanding of Pakistan's power sector and its future direction, according to a press release issued by LEI. Minister for Energy (Power Division), Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, underscored the crucial role of the media in providing accurate and balanced information about the power sector during his closing remarks. Leghari noted that several misconceptions about the power sector were based on incomplete and inaccurate information. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring transparent and factual information is effectively communicated to the public regarding the sector. During the workshop, key reforms and policy initiatives were highlighted by Leghari. The government planned to shift 10 million electricity consumers to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters this year. Additionally, no new imported fuel-based Independent Power Producers (IPPs) would be established in the future. Leghari also announced that agreements with most IPPs have already been renegotiated and that savings of approximately PKR 3.5 trillion for electricity consumers over the next ten to fifteen years are expected through prudent planning and policy measures. Moreover, the recently introduced solar policy will not slow down the pace of solar adoption in the country. Leghari reaffirmed the government's support for investment in battery energy storage systems and stated that efforts were underway to provide more affordable electricity to industrial and commercial consumers during daytime hours. The workshop brought together media professionals from leading print, electronic, and digital outlets, along with students of media sciences. Participants received a comprehensive overview of Pakistan's electricity sector, including generation, transmission, distribution, tariff mechanisms, subsidies, circular debt, distributed solar, demand-side management, electrification, and ongoing market reforms. Technical sessions were conducted by leading energy experts such as the Chairman Board of Directors at National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC), Dr. Fiaz Ahmad Chaudhry from LUMS, Naveed Qaiser from Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC), Umer Farooq from Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), and Omer Haroon Malik from ISMO. Dr. Fiaz Ahmad Chaudhry emphasized the importance of demand-side management, efficient electricity consumption, and consumer-side reforms in addressing Pakistan's energy challenges and ensuring long-term sustainability. He highlighted the role of the LUMS Energy Institute in supporting evidence-based policymaking and advancing practical solutions for the sector. A presentation titled "Future of Pakistan's Power Sector: Government Vision and Strategic Priorities" was delivered by Energy Advisor to the Power Division, Syed Faizan Ali, outlining key policy initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, affordability, and sustainability in the power sector.
