Government initiates probe into collision between a Liberian container vessel and an Emirati cable repair ship near Karachi Port; no casualties reported.
The government launched an investigation on Friday after two foreign vessels collided near the entrance of Karachi Port on Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 7:30pm to 8pm on May 28, close to the Fairway Buoy outside the port. According to the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), the collision involved a Liberia-flagged container vessel, MV Popo, which had just departed from berths 8 and 9, and an Emirati-flagged cable repair vessel, CS NIWA/MV NIWA.
KPT marine teams swiftly responded to the scene and conducted a rescue operation. The KPT some containers from MV Popo fell into the sea following the collision but no loss of life or injuries were reported. Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry ordered an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, emphasizing that it occurred outside the jurisdictional limits of Karachi Port.
Chaudhry praised the port staff for their timely response and effective management during the incident. He also the affected cable-laying vessel was safely brought into the port with assistance from KPT tugboats. The minister highlighted that the accident was due to negligence on the part of both vessel masters and reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring maritime safety.
The investigation is ongoing, with Chaudhry seeking a comprehensive report on the matter. He stressed the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in preventing such incidents in the future. The incident underscores the need for enhanced coordination and communication among vessels navigating the busy waters around Karachi Port.
