Higher Education Commission (HEC) mandates GRE and subject tests for MPhil and MS admissions to enhance quality, transparency, uniformity, and merit-based selection.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced that GRE and subject tests are now mandatory for admission into Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Master of Science (MS) programs. This decision was made public through a notification issued by HEC on Thursday.

According to the Higher Education Commission, these measures aim to ensure quality, transparency, uniformity, and merit-based admissions. The current methods used for Level 7 and Level 8 program admissions have been reviewed in light of this new requirement.

HEC emphasizes the need for a uniform and reliable assessment system at the national level. As such, GRE and relevant subject tests will be mandatory from the fall 2026 admission cycle onwards. All government and private universities are required to admit students into MS/MPhil or equivalent programs only based on these test scores.

The Education Testing Council of HEC will conduct these exams. Universities must ensure compliance with HEC's instructions regarding the implementation of this new policy.
