Sindh initiates comprehensive anti-rabies campaign following alarming rise in dog-bite incidents and rabies fatalities, focusing on prevention and stray dog control.
The Government of Sindh has initiated a province-wide anti-rabies campaign to address the growing burden of dog-bite incidents and the associated deaths from rabies. Alarmed by an estimated 285,000 reported cases of dog bites and dozens of fatalities, officials have taken decisive action to strengthen preventive measures, expand access to critical treatment, and accelerate efforts to manage stray dog populations.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among the public about the risks associated with rabies and promote safe practices. Health departments across Sindh are being mobilized to provide free vaccinations and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to those who have been bitten by dogs. Additionally, there is a focus on educating communities on how to avoid dog bites through responsible pet ownership and proper handling of stray animals.
Strategic measures include the deployment of mobile vaccination units in high-risk areas, setting up dedicated clinics for PEP administration, and conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns. The government has also launched a public education drive to inform citizens about the importance of seeking medical attention immediately after being bitten by a dog.
In parallel, efforts are underway to address the root cause of rabies transmission: stray dogs. Authorities plan to implement humane methods for population control, including sterilization and vaccination programs. This dual approach—combining preventive health measures with responsible management of canine populations—is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of rabies in Sindh.
The launch of this comprehensive campaign marks a significant step towards protecting public health and ensuring that no more lives are lost to this preventable disease. By working closely with local communities, the government aims to create a safer environment for all residents while setting an example for other provinces facing similar challenges.
