Saudi inspectors have seized over 878 tons of unsafe food products in preparation for the upcoming Hajj season, as part of a regulatory campaign.
Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has intensified inspections ahead of the Hajj 1447 AH season, seizing more than 878 tons of non-compliant food items and over 151,000 pharmaceutical and medical products during a large-scale regulatory operation in Makkah and Madinah. The authorities aim to ensure public safety and adhere to international health standards for the millions of pilgrims expected to visit Saudi Arabia this year.
The SFDA’s efforts come amid heightened security measures across the country as preparations continue for one of the world's largest annual gatherings. Inspectors have been conducting thorough checks on food vendors, markets, and storage facilities in key pilgrimage sites to identify any potential health risks or violations of hygiene regulations.
"This campaign is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that Hajj 1447 AH is conducted safely and hygienically," said Dr. Abdullah Al-Mutairi, Director General of the SFDA. "We are working closely with local authorities and international partners to maintain high standards of food safety and quality."
The seizure of unsafe food items includes a wide range of products such as meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and beverages. In addition to food, over 151,000 pharmaceuticals and medical supplies have been inspected, ensuring they meet the necessary health criteria before being made available for pilgrims.
Experts believe that these stringent measures will contribute significantly to maintaining public confidence in Saudi Arabia’s ability to host a safe Hajj pilgrimage this year. The authorities are also emphasizing preventive health practices among pilgrims through various awareness campaigns and informational materials distributed at airports, hotels, and other entry points.
With the upcoming Hajj season expected to attract millions of Muslims from around the globe, these inspections underscore Saudi Arabia's dedication to ensuring that all visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. The SFDA’s efforts are part of broader preparations aimed at maintaining the highest levels of hygiene and safety standards throughout the pilgrimage process.
