The GSMA urges targeted telecom tax reforms in the upcoming FY2026-27 budget to boost digital infrastructure investment and improve nationwide connectivity.
The Global Mobile Industry Association (GSMA) has called for targeted telecom tax reforms in the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27, emphasizing that a more balanced fiscal framework could strengthen digital infrastructure investment and accelerate nationwide connectivity. In a letter addressed to Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, the GSMA expressed appreciation for the government's commitment to these issues.
"Targeted tax reforms can play a crucial role in supporting the growth of the telecommunications sector," said a statement from the GSMA. "By reducing unnecessary burdens on telecom operators, we can create an environment that encourages investment and innovation."
The association highlighted that such reforms would not only benefit the mobile industry but also contribute to broader economic development by fostering digital inclusion across Pakistan.
"This is particularly important as we aim to bridge the digital divide and ensure that all segments of society have access to essential services," added a GSMA spokesperson. "We look forward to working closely with the government to develop policies that align with our shared goals."
The letter also emphasized the need for transparency in tax administration, noting that current inefficiencies could hinder investment in critical infrastructure projects.
"The federal budget is a key opportunity to address these challenges and ensure that telecom investments are aligned with national priorities," stated the GSMA. "We urge policymakers to consider targeted measures that support both domestic operators and international players operating within Pakistan's market."
The GSMA’s request comes at a time when the telecommunications sector in Pakistan continues to grow, driven by increasing demand for mobile services and digital applications. The association believes that targeted tax reforms can help maintain this momentum while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
"This is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and competitive telecom ecosystem," concluded the statement from the GSMA. "We are committed to working with all stakeholders to achieve these objectives."
The GSMA's call for targeted telecom tax reforms underscores its commitment to supporting sustainable growth in Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, which plays a vital role in driving economic development and improving quality of life across the country.
