Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, recently inaugurated the Japan–Pakistan Development Centre at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU). Addressing the ceremony, he termed it a significant step towards strengthening ties between Pakistan and Japan. Speaking about the need to equip young people with modern skills and international languages, Minister Hussain emphasized that this newly established centre will play a crucial role in promoting educational, cultural, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The inauguration event was attended by the Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, Akamatsu Shuichi, as a special guest. Prior to the ceremony, the Federal Minister, Japanese Ambassador, and AIOU Vice Chancellor participated in a tree plantation drive followed by prayers for progress and prosperity. The event commenced with performances of national anthems from both countries.
AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nasir Mahmood highlighted the significance of this development center, stating that it marks an important milestone in enhancing educational and cultural relations between Pakistan and Japan. He noted that AIOU has always focused on modern education, research, and international collaboration, reflecting these values through the establishment of the new center.
Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi expressed appreciation for the strong ties between Pakistan and Japan and affirmed that cooperation in education will continue to grow. He also hoped that the centre would provide students with opportunities to learn Japanese language and enhance their professional skills.
Dr Saima Nasir, Additional Director at the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization, emphasized that such initiatives promote research, innovation, and international collaboration. She added that the center will expose students and researchers to Japanese language, culture, and modern scientific trends, thereby strengthening the university's research capacity.
During the ceremony, a Japanese language class and the "Read Japan Project" library section were also inaugurated. Library Incharge Syed Ghulam Kazim Ali briefed guests about the Read Japan Project and its facilities.
