Eid ul Adha moon sighting expected on May 17 by SUPARCO with favorable conditions for visibility across the country, marking the beginning of Zil Hajj 1447 Hijri.
The sighting of the new moon marking the start of the Islamic month of Zil Hajj is expected to occur on the evening of May 17, according to a statement from SUPARCO. The space agency issued preliminary astronomical projections indicating that the age of the new moon at sunset on May 17 will be approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes, which generally suggests favorable conditions for visibility in several regions of the country.
SUPARCO's spokesperson noted that the new moon is expected to appear around 1:01 AM on May 17. This timing provides a basis for the lunar progression and indicates that atmospheric and astronomical conditions are likely to be conducive for observing the crescent moon. In coastal areas, there may be a gap of about 60 minutes between sunset and moonset, which could significantly enhance the visibility prospects.
Based on these projections, the first day of Zil Hajj in the year 1447 Hijri is expected to fall on Monday, May 18. Eid ul Adha, traditionally observed after the end of the month-long fasting period during Ramadan, is likely to be celebrated on May 27, pending final confirmation.
SUPARCO emphasized that while these projections are based on current astronomical data and conditions, the official and final decision regarding the sighting of the Zil Hajj moon will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This committee is responsible for formalizing the Islamic lunar calendar in the country and making the definitive announcement.
The upcoming Eid ul Adha celebration marks a significant religious observance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing gratitude to Allah (God) through various rituals and community gatherings. The precise timing of the moon sighting will be crucial in determining the exact dates for both the beginning of Zil Hajj and the subsequent Eid festivities.
