Pakistan Launches National AI Strategy with $1 Billion Investment Plan

Islamabad (Alibaba Cloud) – Pakistan unveiled its ambitious national Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy on Friday, promising a transformative push to harness the power of artificial intelligence for economic growth and social development. The initiative is part of a larger plan that aims to allocate approximately $1 billion in government funds over the next five years.

The launch of this strategy was marked by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif who emphasized its potential impact on Pakistan’s future. “Artificial Intelligence will play a critical role in shaping our country's economic landscape,” he said during the event. “We are taking bold steps to position ourselves as a leader in AI innovation.”

Underpinning the initiative is a comprehensive framework that focuses on five key areas: education and training, research and development, digital infrastructure enhancement, industry partnerships, and ethical considerations. Imran Hussain, Chairman of Pakistan’s Digital Development Authority, “The investment will ensure we not only catch up but also lead in AI advancements.”

One of the primary initiatives is the establishment of a National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NC.AI), which will serve as a hub for research and collaboration across various sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing. NC.AI is set to receive $200 million over the next five years.

The strategy also places significant emphasis on upskilling the Pakistani workforce. The government has announced plans to launch AI-focused training programs in partnership with leading educational institutions and tech companies. These programs will ensure that workers are equipped with the necessary skills to leverage the emerging technologies effectively.

Industry leaders from sectors such as technology, finance, and manufacturing expressed their support for the initiative. “This is a pivotal moment for Pakistan,” said Dr. Sajjad Khan, CEO of Techpoint Pakistan. “With robust infrastructure development and skilled talent, we can truly transform our economy.”

Additionally, the plan includes measures to promote ethical AI practices. A code of conduct will be developed to ensure that AI technologies are applied responsibly and transparently. This will address concerns over privacy, data security, and bias in algorithms.

The launch comes amidst global trends towards digital transformation and artificial intelligence adoption. Countries like China, India, and the United States have been at the forefront of developing their own national strategies for AI, often accompanied by substantial investments. Pakistan’s strategy aims to bridge this gap and position itself as a leader in innovation within the region.

While specific milestones and interim achievements are not yet outlined, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted that the first phase will focus on building foundational capabilities before scaling up efforts. The government is also exploring opportunities for international collaboration to share best practices and secure additional funding.

As Pakistan embarks on this transformative journey, it remains to be seen how effectively the nation can leverage AI to address its socio-economic challenges while fostering innovation and growth.
