Karachi Development Authority launches anti-encroachment operation in Surjani Town sectors 10 and 13, reclaiming over 25 acres amid violent resistance.
Karachi Development Authority (KDA) launched a large-scale anti-encroachment operation in Surjani Town sectors 10 and 13 to clear more than 100 acres of government land from illegal constructions and encroachments. The operation began on May 14, with officials facing strong resistance from unidentified individuals who reportedly used stones and even fired aerial weapons, causing panic in the area.
During the first day of the operation, KDA officials reclaimed over 25 acres of land, including the demolition of both temporary and permanent structures as well as several booking offices. According to KDA Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui, operations against encroachments and land grabbers would continue without discrimination, with no illegal occupation of KDA land being tolerated.
Siddiqui emphasized that these measures were part of decisions taken during a recent meeting chaired by Nasir Hussain Shah. The director general stated, "We will not hesitate to take strong action against anyone who violates our rules and regulations."
The resistance encountered during the operation highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by KDA in reclaiming government land from illegal constructions. Local residents expressed their concerns about the impact of these operations on local businesses and daily life.
KDA officials assured that all necessary precautions were taken to ensure public safety during the clearance process. They also promised to provide compensation for any affected individuals, aiming to address grievances and restore trust within the community.
The ongoing campaign against encroachments is part of KDA's broader strategy to improve infrastructure and development in Surjani Town, which has seen significant growth over recent years. However, it remains a contentious issue as some residents argue that the land should be used for public purposes rather than being reclaimed by the authority.
