Italian Orienteer Dies After Collapsing at World Games in China
CHENGDU: Mattia Debertolis, an Italian orienteer, has tragically passed away after collapsing during the World Games held in China last week. Event organizers verified this information on Tuesday.
Reports indicate that Debertolis was discovered unconscious during the men’s middle-distance orienteering event on Friday. He was immediately transported to a hospital for critical care.
Despite the prompt reaction and expert attention provided at a leading Chinese medical center, Debertolis unfortunately died on August 12, 2025.
The International World Games Association, alongside other officials involved in the event, conveyed their profound sadness regarding the athlete’s untimely demise.
Organizers stated in a formal announcement, “Despite receiving immediate specialist medical support, he passed away.”
Orienteering is a demanding outdoor sport that involves navigation across unfamiliar terrain using a map and compass, competing against the clock.
This sport merges rigorous physical exertion with acute map-reading capabilities and problem-solving skills, demanding both stamina and mental sharpness.
The specific cause of Debertolis’s death remains undisclosed as officials await further investigation.
The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) honored Debertolis, highlighting his participation in numerous World Championships and World Cup competitions.
He was remembered as a well-respected athlete. Beyond his athletic achievements, Debertolis was also a skilled civil engineer and was pursuing a PhD at the University of Stockholm, residing there and competing for the IFK Lidingo orienteering club.
The 12th edition of the World Games, currently hosted in Chengdu, central China, showcases a variety of less common sports and disciplines not featured in the Olympic schedule.
