Gyokeres Praises Amorim’s Impact Amidst Transfer Speculation
Sporting CP’s striker, Viktor Gyokeres, has acknowledged the significant influence of his former coach, Ruben Amorim, on his career. International reports on Wednesday highlighted Gyokeres’ comments regarding Amorim’s tactical approach.
Gyokeres, who has attracted attention from Arsenal during this transfer window, thrived under Amorim’s system at Sporting.
It has been reported that the Portuguese manager took a position with Manchester United following his departure from Sporting in November.
Gyokeres emphasized that Amorim’s methods were a perfect fit for him, attributing Sporting’s accomplishments to the coach’s guidance.
“The style of play we had under him suited me perfectly. We won two championships in a row for the first time in 71 years,” Gyokeres stated.
“It’s an incredible achievement, and Ruben Amorim played a big part in that. I can’t thank him enough.”
Under the guidance of Gyokeres and Amorim, Sporting secured their first league title in 19 years during the 2023-24 season. Gyokeres emerged as the league’s leading scorer with 29 goals in his debut season with the Portuguese club.
Gyokeres continued his impressive form, finishing as the top scorer again with 39 goals as Sporting successfully defended their Liga Portugal title the following season.
The former Coventry City forward expressed his surprise at Amorim’s mid-season departure, especially with Sporting leading the table and still competing in the Champions League.
“It was a shock; I’d never seen a coach leave in the middle of the season when everything was going so well. No hard feelings,” Gyökeres commented.
“Yes, it was surprising, but I totally understand his decision.”
Gyokeres might be joining Premier League team Arsenal this summer, as the English side has expressed considerable interest in acquiring the talented forward.
