US Backs Ceasefire Between Pakistan and India
Following recent tensions that arose after the Pahalgam incident, the United States has voiced its support for the ongoing ceasefire between Pakistan and India.
On April 22, an attack in Pahalgam resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians. New Delhi characterized the incident as an act of terror planned by Islamabad; however, officials in Islamabad have refuted these accusations.
During a press briefing in Washington, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated, “We all acknowledge that President Donald Trump’s actions are aimed at resolving long-standing international disputes and conflicts.”
“It shouldn’t come as a surprise that he would address such matters. He appears to be, and indeed has been, instrumental in bringing opposing parties to the table for discussions that were previously deemed impossible.”
Pakistani Delegation’s Visit to Washington
Responding to a query regarding the visit of a Pakistani parliamentary delegation, Bruce verified that the group engaged with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during their visit to Washington last week.
The delegation, spearheaded by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a former foreign minister and prominent figure in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), participated in several significant meetings during their visit.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tasked Bilawal with articulating Pakistan’s viewpoint on the recent disagreements with India and refuting New Delhi’s unsubstantiated claims.
As part of a wider diplomatic endeavor, the parliamentary delegation visited the United States last week and is currently in London. They are scheduled to proceed to Brussels afterward.
The delegation comprises former foreign ministers Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Hina Rabbani Khar, and Khurram Dastgir; Senators Sherry Rehman, Musadik Malik, Faisal Subzwari, and Bushra Anjum Butt; in addition to senior envoys Jalil Abbas Jilani and Tehmina Janjua.
Discussions on Bilateral Relations and Counter-Terrorism
Speaking to journalists, Bruce mentioned that during the meeting, both parties addressed multiple topics, including bilateral ties and collaboration in combating terrorism.
The spokesperson conveyed that the US official reiterated Washington’s backing for the current ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Bruce described the situation as “a crucial moment” where advancement in resolving this protracted dispute seemed attainable.
She concluded by expressing appreciation for the efforts of President Trump, the Vice President, and the Secretary of State in fostering dialogue and promoting peace.
