UEFA Sanctions Barcelona and Inter Milan Over Champions League Misconduct

UEFA’s disciplinary committee has issued penalties to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, his assistant Marcus Sorg, and players Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski, along with fines for both Barcelona and Inter Milan, following incidents in their Champions League semifinal.

Managerial Bans and Fines

Hansi Flick and Marcus Sorg each received a one-match ban and a fine of 20,000 euros ($23,320). This action follows Flick’s vigorous protests against various refereeing decisions during the Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan in May. The 4-3 defeat prevented Barcelona from reaching their first final in ten years. As a result of the sanctions, both Flick and his assistant will be absent from the sidelines for their first Champions League match this season.

Player Fines

In a separate ruling, Barcelona forwards Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski were each fined 5,000 euros by UEFA. These fines were imposed due to breaches of Anti-Doping Regulations, specifically for not immediately reporting to a designated control post during the same match.

Club Fines for Misconduct

Both Barcelona and Inter Milan faced additional fines for separate instances of misconduct. Barcelona was fined 5,250 euros for supporters throwing objects and 2,500 euros for the use of fireworks during the game. Inter Milan received a fine of 22,000 euros due to supporters obstructing public access routes and an additional 11,500 euros for setting off fireworks.

Barcelona’s Financial Fair Play Issues

This summer, Barcelona has encountered difficulties before, including a 15 million euro fine from UEFA for violating Financial Fair Play regulations. The fine may reach 60 million euros if certain conditions are not satisfied this season.
