Tunisia and Morocco Secure Spots in 2026 World Cup
Mohamed Ben Romdhane’s late goal secured Tunisia’s 1-0 victory against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Monday, confirming their qualification for the 2026 World Cup. This win gives them an insurmountable lead in Group H qualifying.
Following this triumph, Tunisia’s point total reached 22 from eight qualifying matches, making them the second African nation to secure a spot in the FIFA World Cup, after Morocco.
Tunisia will participate in the football World Cup for the third time in a row, marking their seventh overall appearance in the tournament. Sami Trabelsi’s team is set to compete in the event co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Confirmation of Tunisia’s place was delayed until Firas Chaouat capitalized on a defensive lapse by the opposition, setting up Ben Romdhane to score in the 94th minute.
Prior to Tunisia’s qualification, Morocco secured their position in the upcoming football World Cup on Saturday.
In other news, the Moroccan squad extended their winning streak with a 2-0 victory over Zambia on Monday, with goals from Youssef En Nesyri and Hamza Igamane.
Elsewhere, Mozambique kept their chances for World Cup qualification alive by defeating Botswana 2-0 in Group G. They currently hold second position, trailing Algeria, but have played one additional match.
Witi and Faisal Banga each scored in their match to claim victory in Maputo.
Nine African teams will directly qualify for the World Cup, with a tenth spot available through an inter-continental play-off.
