Trump Renews Offer to Mediate Kashmir Dispute

Former US President Donald Trump has once again proposed assistance in mediating the protracted Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan, asserting his ability to resolve the matter between the two nuclear powers.

On Thursday, Trump reiterated his willingness to help both nations achieve a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict, mirroring previous comments from the US State Department earlier in the week.

This renewed offer follows a ceasefire agreement he facilitated after India and Pakistan approached a dangerous armed confrontation – one of their most severe military standoffs in recent years.

Speaking to journalists after signing a bill into law on Thursday, Trump stated he had “stopped a war” between Pakistan and India.

“They were eventually going to go nuclear… and I prevented it. I contacted each leader… and discussed trade with them,” Trump said.

“I stated, ‘You won’t trade with us if you engage in warfare… if you initiate the use of nuclear arms.’ They were both incredible and grasped the situation immediately, and they ceased their actions. I halted that war through phone calls and trade discussions,” Trump added.

Acknowledging the leaders of both nations for their demonstrated restraint, Trump affirmed his commitment to supporting peace efforts. “I will collaborate with both of you to determine if, after a ‘thousand’ years, a resolution regarding Kashmir can be reached,” he declared.

“We intend to unite them. I conveyed to them, India and Pakistan… that they have a longstanding rivalry concerning Kashmir. I assured them, ‘I am capable of resolving anything,’” Trump remarked while answering another inquiry.

“I am prepared to serve as your arbitrator. I possess the ability to resolve any issue.”

When questioned about potential specific actions by Washington, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce mentioned earlier in the week that Trump has a history of bringing unlikely parties together for negotiations.

She voiced optimism that a breakthrough on the Kashmir matter could be attained, highlighting Trump as “the only individual capable of bringing certain parties to the table for discussions that were previously deemed impossible.”

Kashmir remains a sensitive and contested area, serving as a point of contention between the two nuclear-armed neighbors for over 70 years.
