Trump Warns Iran on Nuclear Ambitions, Hints at Military Action

  • Trump’s comments come after a meeting between a US representative and an Iranian official.
  • Both parties have called the discussions on Saturday “positive” and “productive.”
  • The US president claims Iran is nearing the development of a nuclear weapon.

President Donald Trump has cautioned Iran against pursuing nuclear weapons, warning of potential military action targeting its nuclear facilities.

Trump told reporters on Monday that Iran is intentionally delaying nuclear negotiations with the United States. He made these remarks following a recent meeting in Oman between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and a high-ranking Iranian official.

Both sides characterized the Saturday talks as “positive” and “constructive.” A second round of discussions is planned for the coming weekend, likely in Rome, according to a source familiar with the arrangements.

These talks are reportedly exploratory, focusing on establishing a general framework for a possible agreement. However, Trump emphasized that any agreement must ensure Iran abandons its nuclear weapons aspirations.

“Iran must abandon the idea of having a nuclear weapon. They cannot possess a nuclear weapon,” he stated.

When questioned about the possibility of a US military strike on Tehran’s nuclear sites, Trump responded, “Of course, it’s an option.”

He added that Iran is “fairly close” to developing a nuclear weapon and urged immediate action to prevent severe consequences.

Indirect negotiations between the US and Iran under former President Joe Biden made minimal headway.

The last formal agreement, the 2015 international nuclear accord, was established under President Barack Obama but later abandoned by Trump during his first term.
