Del Castillo and Pina each score as Spain clinches a historic win
BERN: Spain advanced to the UEFA Women’s Euro semi-finals after a decisive 2-0 victory against Switzerland at Wankdorf Stadium on Friday. Goals were scored by Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina.
For more than an hour, the Swiss squad effectively resisted Spain’s offensive efforts, maintaining a disciplined defensive structure while seeking counter-attacking opportunities.
However, Spain gradually asserted control, maintaining possession and generating scoring opportunities, ultimately achieving the breakthrough they sought.
In the 66th minute, Aitana Bonmatí skillfully unlocked the Swiss defense with a moment of brilliance. She delivered a rabona pass to substitute Athenea del Castillo, who precisely directed the ball past Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng to put Spain ahead 1-0.
Only five minutes later, Spain extended their advantage with a goal from Claudia Pina. The forward, positioned just outside the penalty area, launched a superb shot into the top corner, leaving Peng unable to react and igniting celebrations among the Spanish team and their supporters.
Following the match, Athenea expressed her joy with both the outcome and the team’s overall performance, especially noting the strong support from the fans.
She stated, “We are thrilled to have reached the semi-finals. The team performed with maximum effort. The atmosphere was amazing, and we hope to experience it again.”
“The team developed numerous chances, but our conversion rate wasn’t great. We struggled at times, but ultimately, we secured the win.”
Late in the match, Alexia Putellas of Spain missed a penalty, and Switzerland’s Noelle Maritz received a straight red card in added time for a dangerous tackle, adding to the drama.
