Son Heung-min to Join LAFC in Record MLS Deal

Son Heung-min is poised to move to LAFC in what would be a record-breaking Major League Soccer (MLS) agreement. This follows announcements that he will be leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to international reports on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that LAFC has consented to a transfer amount of about $26 million for Son. This sum would surpass the existing MLS record of $22 million, which Atlanta United FC spent last winter to acquire Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Son, 33, verified his departure from the Premier League club recently, marking the end of his decade-long stay at Tottenham. However, he did not reveal his future destination at that time.

Son’s final appearance for Spurs took place on Sunday in front of 64,773 spectators at Seoul World Cup Stadium. In a preseason exhibition, Tottenham and Newcastle United played to a 1-1 draw.

Son was replaced in the 65th minute, and the South Korean national team captain received a guard of honour from both teams’ players.

He expressed his sentiments on Spurs’ website: “It was a special moment. I will always value and remember these wonderful moments with the fans, players, and manager.”

“He was understanding of my circumstance and was consistently supportive. He always listened to me and inquired about my desires. I am extremely grateful and have great respect.”

During his time with Spurs, Son participated in 454 games and scored 173 goals. In the 2021–22 season, he also won the Premier League Golden Boot.

Son Heung-min initially joined Tottenham in August 2015 and secured his first title with the team after defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Son is also only the seventh player to have made 450 or more appearances for Spurs. He has previously played for Bundesliga teams such as Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen.
