Pakistani-Origin Candidate Takes Unique Approach in Canadian Elections
Rana Aslam, a candidate with Pakistani roots, has announced a distinctive strategy for contesting elections in Canada, taking a one-day leave from his governmental role.
Aslam clarified that a victory would prompt his resignation from his current position, whereas a defeat would result in his immediate return to work the following day.
Running in the Hamilton constituency under the Liberal Party of Canada, Aslam has garnered significant endorsement from party leader Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, who has visited Hamilton on two occasions to support his campaign.
Interestingly, Aslam is also employed as an engineer by the government in Hamilton. He has secured leave to participate in the election, adhering to established regulations. Should he secure a seat as a Member of Parliament, he will tender his resignation on April 29. Conversely, if his electoral bid is unsuccessful, he intends to resume his engineering responsibilities upon the conclusion of his leave on the same date.
Originally hailing from Multan, Aslam relocated to Hamilton in 2003. He became a member of the Liberal Party in 2010 and has since occupied various roles within the party structure. Balancing familial commitments, he pursued further education in Canada. He is currently contesting from a constituency in Hamilton characterized by disadvantage and numerous challenges.
In an interview, he noted that tariffs imposed by US President Trump have amplified the difficulties faced by the aluminum manufacturing sector in Hamilton. He stated that $3.5 million had been expended on tariffs for aluminum supplied to the United States within a single month. Consequently, if elected, his priorities would encompass new construction projects, road development and maintenance, alongside enhancements to civic amenities within his constituency.
Answering a question, he pointed out that the number of Pakistani-Canadian voters within his constituency is relatively small. Nevertheless, he benefits from the robust support and collaboration of his committed Pakistani friends, with assurances of backing from other minority communities as well.
Sources suggest that Aslam is encountering considerable competition from the NDP candidate in this constituency. However, the rising favorability of the Liberal Party is considered to bolster his standing.
Aslam maintains a deep affection for his native Pakistan and the mangoes of Shujaabad. In contrast to Pakistani politicians who often campaign with large convoys, he was observed engaging with voters in his constituency leading up to the election, wearing a volunteer badge and accompanied by a small group of young supporters.
