Pakistan and Malaysia Enhance Bilateral Ties

Pakistan and Malaysia have reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening collaboration across several sectors, including commerce, education, technology, and governance. This announcement coincided with Kuala Lumpur’s intentions to import $200 million worth of halal meat from Pakistan.

The declaration occurred during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s three-day official visit to Malaysia. He and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, engaged in extensive discussions centered on reinforcing bilateral cooperation.

Joint Press Conference Highlights

During a joint press conference alongside his Malaysian counterpart, PM Shehbaz lauded Ibrahim’s substantial contribution to Malaysia’s progress, recognizing him as an exceptional leader. Shehbaz noted the positive discussions held during Ibrahim’s memorable visit to Pakistan.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

Regarding bilateral trade, the Prime Minister appreciated Malaysia’s decision to import halal meat valued at $200 million from Pakistan. He conveyed intentions to further expand halal meat trade, expressing enthusiasm for joint ventures and collaboration to leverage Malaysia’s proficiency.

“Our relations have grown stronger, and I appreciate the warm reception from the people of Malaysia,” remarked Prime Minister Shehbaz, considering Malaysia a second home.

PM Shehbaz also acknowledged the significant number of Pakistani students pursuing education in Malaysia, expressing gratitude for the opportunities extended to them.

Regional Stability and Counter-Terrorism

Malaysian PM Ibrahim underscored the importance of peace between Pakistan and India for regional stability. He also assured Malaysia’s full cooperation in combating terrorism.

In a gesture of goodwill, Shehbaz Sharif praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recently published book, emphasizing its potential to foster stronger ties between Islamabad and Kuala Lumpur.

Premier Shehbaz concluded that the visit would deepen the bonds between the two friendly nations.

Agreements Signed

Pakistan and Malaysia formalized six agreements to bolster bilateral cooperation in education, halal certification, tourism, and anti-corruption efforts.

The pre-signed documents were exchanged at a ceremony held at Perdana Putra Complex, witnessed by both prime ministers following their meeting and delegation-level talks.

  • An MoU was signed between the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) and the Foreign Service Academy of Pakistan to promote cooperation in diplomatic training.
  • An MoU was established between the two governments to enhance cooperation in the tourism sector.
  • An MoU was formalized on Halal Certification.
  • Both countries committed to expanding cooperation in preventing and combating corruption.
  • An accord was established to strengthen collaboration between the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) of Pakistan and the Small and Medium Enterprises Corporation of Malaysia.
Arrival and Reception

Earlier, upon arrival for the official reception, the Prime Minister received a guard of honor and a warm welcome from PM Ibrahim.

The national anthems of both nations were played as the leaders paid their respects.

Following introductions of their respective delegations, the leaders proceeded to a one-on-one meeting and delegation-level discussions to assess Pakistan-Malaysia relations and identify new avenues for collaboration.

Accompanied by key government officials, the Prime Minister’s visit to Malaysia was at the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart.

Upon arriving at Bunga Raya International Airport, he was greeted by Malaysian officials and Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Prior to his departure, the Prime Minister expressed his eagerness for productive discussions with his Malaysian counterpart, underscoring the mutual dedication to enhancing trade and economic cooperation.

PM Shehbaz conveyed his anticipation for a comprehensive exchange of views on enhancing trade, economic engagement, and bilateral cooperation across various fields.
