Son Heung-min Plays Final Game as Tottenham Held to Draw

SEOUL: In front of 64,773 spectators, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United tied 1-1 as South Korean captain Son Heung-min played his farewell match for Spurs on home ground this Sunday.

Son was in the starting lineup and participated for 65 minutes at Seoul World Cup Stadium. It is anticipated that this will be his final appearance in a Spurs jersey.

Son had previously revealed on Saturday that this game would be his last as a Tottenham player, putting an end to speculations regarding his future.

“I’ve made the choice to leave the squad this summer,” Son stated.

“I believe it was among the most difficult choices I’ve had to make in my football career. I am incredibly proud of having played football and been a member of the same team for ten years, but I believe I gave the team my all every single day.

“I gave it my best effort both on and off the field, and after winning the Europa League, I felt I had done everything I could and had accomplished my goals.”

Son participated in 454 games for Spurs, netting 173 goals. In the 2021–22 season, he also took home the Premier League Golden Boot.

Son Heung-min, who became a member of Tottenham in August 2015, did not reveal his next club; however, the 33-year-old has been associated with Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Tottenham took the advantage in the game, with the first goal scored in the fourth minute. Brennan Johnson took advantage of Kevin Danso’s pass, firing a right-footed strike past Nick Pope.

Johnson then imitated Son’s renowned celebration, recognizing him in his final match with the Spurs.

Harvey Barnes equalized, bringing Newcastle back into the game in the 38th minute, with Anthony Gordon providing the assist.

Son was replaced in the 65th minute; before leaving the field, the South Korean football team captain embraced both his teammates and rivals.
