Former Boca Juniors Coach Miguel Angel Russo Passes Away at 69

BUENOS AIRES: Miguel Angel Russo, previously the coach of Boca Juniors, died on Wednesday at the age of 69 after an extended battle with cancer, the club announced on Thursday.

Russo had relinquished his daily managerial responsibilities due to his ailment and had been under care at home after multiple hospitalizations in recent months.

Despite his deteriorating condition, he maintained connections with the squad and remained in close communication with the club’s administration and his coaching staff.

Prior to leading Boca Juniors to the Club World Cup this year, Russo served three stints as the club’s manager, prominently guiding them to the Copa Libertadores title in 2007 and the Argentine league title in 2020.

In a statement, Boca Juniors honored their former coach, noting that Russo “leaves a lasting impact on our club and will always be remembered for his joy, affection, and commitment.”

Boca and Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani also shared his grief on Instagram, commending Russo’s fortitude and spirit.

“Thank you, Miguel, for demonstrating to us all such a significant value called ‘courage,’” Cavani expressed.

Beyond Argentina, Russo’s managerial path included stints in numerous countries, such as Alianza Lima, Cerro Porteno, Millonarios, Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia), Universidad de Chile, Salamanca (Spain), and Morelia (Mexico).

As a player, Russo had a notable career with Estudiantes, making over 400 appearances and securing two national championships with the team.
