Mbappe Ruled Out of World Cup Qualifier Against Iceland Due to Injury

Kylian Mbappe, the French captain, will miss Monday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Iceland. This decision follows a right ankle injury he sustained during France’s 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan, according to the French Football Federation (FFF) on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 83rd minute against Azerbaijan, shortly after the 26-year-old forward had scored a goal and provided an assist.

Mbappe’s goal against Azerbaijan marked his 53rd goal in 93 appearances for his country, bringing him closer to Olivier Giroud’s record of 57 goals. It also represented Mbappe’s tenth consecutive goal for both club and country, boosting his season total to 17. He has scored 14 goals in 10 games for Real Madrid this season.

Reports indicate that Mbappe’s injury is not considered severe after medical examinations.

The FFF released a statement confirming that Mbappe had a discussion with Didier Deschamps, who then permitted the captain to return to Real Madrid without a replacement being called up.

The FFF stated, “Upon the French delegation’s return, the team captain spoke with Didier Deschamps. The national coach has acknowledged his absence. Kylian Mbappé has been released to his club and will not be replaced.”

In related news, Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder, Franco Mastantuono, has also withdrawn from the Argentina national team due to a muscle strain sustained during training. The 18-year-old suffered the injury during Madrid’s victory over Villarreal on October 4.

France has made an impressive start to the World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign and currently holds the top spot in Group D with nine points from three matches.
