Hasan Nawaz Sharif Released from Bankruptcy in the UK
The United Kingdom’s tax authority, HMRC, has discharged Hasan Nawaz Sharif from bankruptcy, allowing him to resume his role as a company director and conduct business as usual.
Government records in the UK confirm that Hasan’s bankruptcy concluded on April 29, 2025.
A legal expert commented, “Hasan Nawaz Sharif’s bankruptcy is now over. The UK tax authority has validated that there were no illicit activities or misconduct on Hasan’s side. Discharge from bankruptcy occurs when no illegal actions are found.”
The source further explained, “Otherwise, UK tax authorities have the right to impose delays if they identify any non-compliance. Hasan Nawaz is now free from all bankruptcy-related limitations and debts. His bankruptcy lasted for only a year.”
Previously, about two months prior, the UK HMRC website had identified Hasan, the son of PML-N President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, as a “deliberate tax defaulter,” indicating that he opted for bankruptcy and declined to settle a tax liability of approximately £10 million.
Hasan declared bankruptcy following the HMRC’s demand for approximately £10 million in taxes for the period spanning from April 5, 2015, to April 6, 2016. Nevertheless, the case remained a civil matter since it lacked any criminal component.
The former prime minister’s son contested the tax claim, asserting that he had duly paid all relevant taxes for the specified duration. However, the HMRC pursued additional tax payments years later, beyond the statute of limitations. Consequently, he initiated legal proceedings against the HMRC.
In late 2023, the official UK Gazette, the public record keeper, released specifics about the bankruptcy, stating that Hasan, residing at Flat 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, and functioning as a company director, had been declared bankrupt in the High Court of Justice under case No 694 of 2023, filed on August 25, 2023.
The bankruptcy decree was officially issued on April 29, 2024, as a result of action initiated by creditors due to non-payment. Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) brought the civil action against Hasan Nawaz, who was defended by Kaur Maxwell.
Until they are formally released from bankruptcy, a bankrupt individual is barred from serving as a director or participating in the management of a business, unless they receive court authorization to continue in their role as a director.
Hasan now satisfies all requirements to hold positions as a director of companies operating in the UK, with no limitations imposed.
A bankruptcy discharge represents a court ruling that releases an individual or entity from particular debts and responsibilities owed to creditors. Put simply, it is a lawful procedure that eradicates the debtor’s duty to settle certain categories of obligations incurred before filing the bankruptcy case.
Upon the issuance of a bankruptcy discharge, the debtor is no longer legally bound to repay the discharged debts, and creditors are forbidden from attempting to recoup these debts.
