England Halts Germany’s 20-Game Winning Streak
BRATISLAVA: In a thrilling finish, Jonathan Rowe’s extra-time goal secured a 3-2 victory for England against Germany in the Under-21 European Championship final, held at Tehelne Pole on Saturday.
Lee Carsley’s team successfully defended their title from two years prior. However, the German squad entered the final as the favorites, having previously defeated England during the group stage.
England established early dominance, taking the lead in the fifth minute. Omari Hutchinson’s initial shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, but the clearance fell to Harvey Elliot, who skillfully placed a low shot inside the near post.
Elliot also played a crucial role in England’s second goal, initiating the play with a well-placed pass to James McAtee.
As McAtee was pressured by two defenders, he passed the ball to Omari Hutchinson, who then fired a low shot through the goalkeeper’s legs, extending England’s lead in the 24th minute.
Paul Nebel delivered a cross from the wing, and Nelson Weiper headed the ball past England’s goalkeeper, James Beadle, without any opposition.
Notably, Germany’s equalizing goal occurred in the 61st minute from a corner kick that reached Nebel.
Rowe replaced Elliot near the end of regulation time and promptly made a difference. Following his goal, Germany was unable to recover. England withstood intense pressure, with the German side hitting the post in added time.
This defeat concludes Germany’s 20-game undefeated streak.
