Egypt Qualifies for World Cup

Egypt secured their place in the World Cup finals with a decisive 3-0 victory over Djibouti on Wednesday. This win marks them as the third team from Africa to qualify, following Morocco and Tunisia. Meanwhile, Cape Verde Islands and Ghana have moved closer to securing their spots.

Mohamed Salah’s two goals, along with Ibrahim Adel’s opening score, propelled Egypt past Djibouti in Casablanca. This victory ensured Egypt’s top position in Group A, surpassing Burkina Faso, who achieved a 1-0 away win against Sierra Leone.

Egypt boasts an unassailable 23 points from their undefeated campaign. They have previously participated in three World Cups and will join Morocco and Tunisia at the upcoming tournament in North America.

Cape Verde’s fate remains uncertain as they await their final chance to clinch a World Cup spot after a 3-3 draw in Libya. Ghana strengthened their position in Group I with a 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic, while Madagascar defeated the Comoros Islands 2-1.

Ghana needs only a single point from their last match against Comoros in Accra. Mohammed Salisu’s header put them ahead, with further goals from Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Cape Verde was close to securing a historic World Cup qualification in Tripoli but was denied by an incorrect offside call during a counter-attack in the final minute.

Despite trailing 3-1, they fought back to level the score with eight minutes remaining. If Cape Verde defeats Eswatini at home on Monday, they will become the second smallest nation to ever qualify for a World Cup.

Cape Verde now has 20 points, leading Cameroon by two points after their 2-0 victory over Mauritius. Angola drew 2-2 with Eswatini in Patrice Beaumelle’s debut match as coach. Mali secured a 2-0 win against Chad, and Ethiopia defeated Guinea Bissau 1-0 in other matches.
