Germany Set to Clash with Spain in Zurich Semi-Final; England to Face Italy in Geneva Showdown

SWITZERLAND: Following a hard-fought 6-5 penalty shootout victory against France at St. Jakobs-Park on Saturday, German coach Christian Wuck expressed his confidence that his players will recuperate physically and mentally for Wednesday’s Euro 2025 semi-final match against Spain.

France initiated the match with vigor, with midfielder Grace Geyoro scoring an early goal within the first 15 minutes, providing her team with a positive start.

Germany responded, with defender Sjoeke Nusken scoring to level the score at 1-1, which remained after extra time.

Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger played a pivotal role in the shootout, scoring a penalty and saving two of France’s attempts, securing Germany’s advancement.

Coach Wueck conveyed to reporters his optimism regarding the team’s recovery before the semi-final. He acknowledged the emotional nature of the game but emphasized their enjoyment of it.

“We simply need to overcome this discomfort, assess our available resources, and take appropriate measures. Our medical staff, physical therapists, and entire team must intervene, and I am hopeful that we can restore the players’ condition within three days,” Wueck stated.

“This match was undoubtedly emotionally charged due to our progression, but in football, emotions constitute a significant portion of the value, and I believe that’s what ultimately determined the outcome. Everyone who celebrated our victory understands this.”

Despite a 4-1 defeat to Sweden and injuries sustained during their challenging win against France, the team’s mental fortitude propelled them to the semi-finals.

Germany will compete against Spain in their semi-final match in Zurich on Wednesday, while reigning champions England will face Italy the day before in Geneva.
