Chelsea Advances to FIFA Club World Cup Final

EAST RUTHERFORD: At MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, Chelsea defeated Fluminense 2-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final, with Joao Pedro putting on an outstanding display against his former team, securing Chelsea’s spot in the final.

The 23-year-old Brazilian forward, who recently transferred to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for £60 million ($81.5 million), initiated the scoring in the 18th minute with an impressive, well-placed shot.

Early in the second half, he extended their advantage by completing a counter-attack that he began by gaining possession in the midfield and partnering with Pedro Neto on the right.

Pedro’s second score, which occurred in the 56th minute, essentially decided the game because Fluminense had trouble taking control and was unable to launch a significant comeback.

A noteworthy event occurred in the first half when referee Francois Letexier reversed his own penalty call in the 36th minute after a VAR review revealed that Trevoh Chalobah’s arm was naturally close to his body.

After the game, Pedro conveyed conflicting feelings, recognizing the personal importance of playing against his old team.

“I’m pleased to have scored my first goal, but I also understand the significance of this tournament for them,” Pedro stated.

“I can’t simply apologize; I must remain professional. I am employed by Chelsea and compensated to score. I was happy to score today,” he continued.

Notably, Chelsea will compete against either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the final on Sunday; those teams will play in the second semi-final on Wednesday.
