LAHORE – At least 11 people have lost their lives and 35 others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across Punjab as heavy monsoon rains continue to batter the region, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed in its latest report.
The data, covering the period from June 25 to June 27, revealed a total of 25 severe incidents triggered by torrential rains and strong winds, primarily in districts such as Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, and Khanewal. The majority of fatalities were caused by the collapse of rooftops and boundary walls, a common danger during monsoon downpours, especially in areas with weakened or aging infrastructure.
Emergency response teams were swiftly dispatched to the affected locations, providing immediate medical aid and support to the injured. Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and ordered local administrations to ensure optimal care for all injured individuals.
Under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, financial compensation will be extended to the families of the deceased. The PDMA emphasized the need for citizens to avoid staying in structurally unsafe buildings, warning that old, neglected structures become particularly hazardous during persistent rainfall.
With the current monsoon spell forecasted to last until July 1, PDMA has advised the public to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to rain safety guidelines. Citizens are encouraged to report any hazardous conditions and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in high-risk zones.
As climate patterns shift and monsoon intensity rises, Punjab’s disaster management authorities continue working around the clock to mitigate risks and safeguard lives during extreme weather events.
