Karachi Braces for Rising Heat, Heatwave Conditions Expected

Karachi is anticipated to experience an upswing in heat intensity beginning Sunday, according to a warning issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Heatwave-like conditions are projected to develop between April 20 and 23.

The Met Office indicates that the expected temperature increase stems from an alteration in wind direction.

Additionally, the Meteorological Department has alerted that similar heatwave conditions might return to other areas of Sindh starting from April 24.

The weather forecast for Karachi predicts hot and humid conditions over the next 24 hours.

The city’s maximum temperature is expected to fluctuate between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.5 °C. Humidity levels are at 77%, adding to the discomfort felt throughout the city.

Intermittent strong winds are also anticipated during this period, although sea breezes are maintaining a moderate pace of 12 kilometres per hour.

The forecast follows statements made last week by PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir, who mentioned Karachi’s expected heatwave at the end of the current month.

He noted that temperatures are likely to remain above average between April and June, leading to persistent heatwave-like conditions in South Punjab and parts of Sindh.

The PMD has also cautioned that excessive heat could lead to dust storms and windstorms, potentially causing damage to vulnerable infrastructure such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

The general public, especially children, women, and senior citizens, are advised to avoid direct sunlight exposure and stay adequately hydrated.

However, suggesting potential improvement in weather conditions elsewhere in the country, the Met Office stated that a westerly wind system might affect the upper regions, potentially bringing rain and hail until April 20.
