Heatwave Alert: PMD Forecasts Rising Temperatures Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A high-pressure system forming in the upper atmosphere from April 13 is expected to bring heatwave conditions to Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The Met Office has indicated that temperatures will rise in most parts of the country. The southern regions, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, are predicted to experience particularly severe heatwave conditions starting April 14.

During the day, temperatures in these areas may exceed normal levels by 6-8°C between April 13 and 18.

The northern and central regions, encompassing upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, are expected to see temperatures 4-6°C higher than normal from April 14 to 18.

Night-time temperatures are also likely to remain elevated throughout the forecast period.

The intense heat might also lead to dust and windstorms, potentially causing damage to vulnerable infrastructure such as power poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

The public, especially children, women, and the elderly, are advised to avoid direct sunlight exposure and stay hydrated.

Farmers are also encouraged to adjust their farming activities, particularly wheat harvesting, in line with the forecast and to ensure the safety of their livestock.

Increased temperatures in northern regions may cause accelerated snowmelt from April 14 to 18, raising the risk of flooding.

All relevant authorities have been directed to remain vigilant and implement precautionary measures to minimize potential risks.
