Karachi Braces for Rising Temperatures as Heatwave Looms

  • Karachi temperatures expected to climb from April 20-24.
  • Heatwave conditions anticipated in Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab.
  • Upper regions of the country may experience rain and hail due to a westerly wind system.

Karachi is bracing for a potential heatwave as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning amid rising temperatures across the country. The alert indicates that Karachi residents should prepare for hotter conditions starting April 20.

The meteorological office forecasts that the mercury will rise in the metropolis between April 20 and April 24. Moreover, a heatwave is expected to affect areas within Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab until April 18.

In Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana, temperatures could soar 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above the typical range. Additionally, strong winds are predicted for Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Hyderabad, according to the PMD.

The weather is expected to be hot and humid in Karachi over the coming days, according to forecasts.

A PMD spokesperson previously indicated that Karachi could experience a heatwave towards the end of the month.

Temperatures are anticipated to remain higher than average from April to June, with heatwave conditions likely in South Punjab and parts of Sindh.

The PMD has cautioned that the intense heat may lead to dust and windstorms, which could damage vulnerable infrastructure, including electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

Citizens, especially children, women, and the elderly, are advised to avoid direct sunlight exposure and stay hydrated.

In contrast, other regions of the country may see improved weather. A westerly wind system is expected to influence the upper parts of the country, potentially bringing rain and hail until April 20.
