Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori Urges Supreme Court to Address Surge in Karachi Traffic Accidents
In response to the alarming increase in fatal traffic accidents in Karachi, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has formally appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi for judicial intervention. In his letter dated March 27, 2025, Governor Tessori highlighted that over 70 fatalities have been reported this year alone, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action to curb reckless driving involving dumpers and tankers.
A particularly tragic incident occurred on March 24 at Malir Halt, where a speeding water bowser struck a motorcycle carrying Abdul Qayyum and his pregnant wife, Zainab. The collision resulted in the immediate deaths of both parents and their newborn child, who was delivered on the roadside following the accident. This heartbreaking event has intensified public outcry over road safety in the city.
Governor Tessori’s letter references previous communications with the Sindh High Court, dated February 6 and February 14, which called for strict enforcement of traffic regulations and accountability for administrative lapses contributing to such tragedies. Despite these appeals, the frequency of fatal accidents has persisted, prompting the governor to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention.
Expressing frustration over the inaction of relevant authorities, Governor Tessori stated, “Innocent citizens in Karachi have been falling victim to tankers and dumpers for months, yet the authorities remain as silent spectators.” He further questioned, “Who are these people driving dumpers on the roads without number plates? These are illegal immigrants who are spreading death in the city, and no one is stopping them.”
The governor has called for immediate and decisive measures to enhance traffic safety, including stricter enforcement of existing laws, improved regulation of heavy vehicles, and accountability for those responsible for negligence. He emphasized that the residents of Karachi are looking to the judiciary to ensure their safety and prevent further loss of life on the city’s roads.
