Rashford Reflects on Manchester United’s Struggles, Cites Liverpool’s Example
Marcus Rashford has voiced his opinion on the problems at Manchester United, using Liverpool as an example and suggesting that a true transformation under Ruben Amorim is yet to commence. This statement comes after United’s disappointing season.
Rashford, aged 27, recently joined Barcelona on a season-long loan, departing from the club where he developed. Prior to this move, he spent time on loan with Aston Villa following a decline in his standing after Amorim’s appointment.
Manchester United concluded the previous season in 15th position under the guidance of the Portuguese coach, marking their worst finish in the Premier League era.
However, Rashford emphasizes the need for consistency in managerial appointments and strategies, pointing out that the club has seen six different permanent managers since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
“We have underperformed significantly, but stepping back allows perspective. What do you expect?” Rashford questioned.
“There’s talk of a transition period lasting years, but a transition needs a starting point. That point hasn’t arrived yet.”
He further drew parallels with Liverpool’s journey under Jurgen Klopp.
“Liverpool appointed Klopp and stayed patient. Success didn’t come instantly. People often only remember his later achievements, competing with Manchester City and securing major trophies,” he noted.
Rashford stressed the importance of establishing a clear plan and adhering to it to initiate a successful transition.
“Starting a transition requires a plan and commitment, which isn’t simple. Realism about the situation is crucial. The frequent changes in managers, ideas, and strategies have left us in limbo,” the England international added.
Since Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club in late 2023, there’s been a push to implement a more defined strategy. The club invested over £200 million during the recent transfer window, acquiring forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.
However, Rashford believes United have lost sight of the values that Ferguson instilled.
“Under Ferguson, the first team and the academy followed unified principles. Players from any age group understood the Manchester United approach,” Rashford explained.
“Successful teams maintain principles that incoming coaches and players must respect or build upon.”
“At times, United showed a desire to win, but it was reactive. Constant changes in direction hinder any chance of winning the league.”
Rashford has made 426 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 138 goals and providing 42 assists. However, his recent loan move to Barcelona suggests he may have played his final game for the club, with the potential for a permanent transfer.
