McGregor’s Mockery: Smith’s Loss Sparks Controversy

Conor McGregor, the former champion in both featherweight and lightweight divisions, is once again embroiled in controversy after he appeared to mock Anthony Smith’s recent defeat, potentially Smith’s last showing in the UFC.

Following Smith’s emotional setback against Zhang Mingyang at the Kansas City UFC event, McGregor shared what seemed to be a taunting emoji on X (formerly Twitter), seemingly ridiculing the tough loss.

This action immediately triggered widespread condemnation throughout the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) community. Fans and fellow fighters criticized McGregor’s behavior, deeming it as both “classless” and “disrespectful,” especially considering the potential end of Smith’s career.

Although the post was deleted by McGregor shortly after, screenshots rapidly circulated, intensifying the negative reaction.

The relationship between McGregor and Smith has been strained for over two years, originating from a contentious exchange that put the two at odds. McGregor’s recent taunt has only served to deepen their existing animosity.

Despite the uproar, Anthony Smith maintained composure during his post-fight interview, emphasizing gratitude rather than dwelling on negativity. He expressed thanks to UFC President Dana White, the matchmakers, and all the staff for their continuous support throughout his career.

Smith’s Gratitude

“I want to extend my gratitude to Dana (White), Hunter (Campbell), and Sean Shelby for rescuing me from despair after my release from Strikeforce,” Smith stated.

“Every staff member, from the security personnel to the makeup artists, each one of you has significantly impacted my life,” he added.

Meanwhile, McGregor has been hinting at a possible return to the UFC, sparking renewed excitement about a much-anticipated fight with Michael Chandler.

The two competitors recently engaged in cryptic posts on social media, igniting enthusiasm among supporters and sparking rumors about their long-awaited confrontation.

McGregor has not competed since July 2021, when he was defeated by Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. However, he recently posted on X: “IRON MIKE CHANDLER. Unfinished business,” suggesting his future plans.

Chandler swiftly responded, tweeting: “Unfinished Business Loading…” and later sharing on Threads: “Dust off the old contract and add some new ink… I’m ready tomorrow.”

McGregor and Chandler were previously opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31 in 2023, adding more intrigue to their ongoing rivalry.
