Social Media Clash: Adnan Sami and Fawad Chaudhry Engage in Heated Exchange
A renewed exchange of words has ignited on social media between singer Adnan Sami, known for relinquishing his Pakistani citizenship to become an Indian national, and former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry. This altercation arises amidst heightened tensions following India’s order for Pakistani citizens to leave the country.
The dispute began after Fawad Chaudhry addressed Indian Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent directive, which mandates all Pakistani citizens residing in India to depart by April 27, while those holding medical visas have until April 29.
Fawad questioned on X, “What about Adnan Sami?” suggesting uncertainty about whether the singer would also face expulsion.
Sami, who became a naturalized Indian citizen in 2016, responded to Fawad’s comment, branding him an “illiterate idiot” and underscoring that he legally obtained Indian citizenship years prior.
The back-and-forth continued as Fawad reminded Sami of his roots, stating, “Adnan Sami is from Lahore.”
The former minister added, “Our very own Lahori Adnan Sami aisay lag rahay hein jaisey balooon se hawa nikal chuki hooo [Our very own Adnan Sami looks like all the air has been let out of a balloon]… get well soon @AdnanSamiLive.”
Sami countered, correcting him: “My roots are from Peshawar, not Lahore! To think that you were Minister of (Mis)Information and have no knowledge about any information!”
Sami further retorted, “Meri tho hawa nikal gaee — tu abhi bhi balloon hai [The air has been let out of me, but you are still a balloon]! And you were Minister of Science?”
This online confrontation is occurring against the backdrop of strained Pakistan-India relations, which worsened after the April 22 assault in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) where 26 Indian tourists lost their lives.
Subsequently, India suspended visa services for Pakistani citizens and instructed all Pakistanis to leave the country by April 27, with an extension until April 29 for medical visa holders.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has announced the revocation of all existing Pakistani visas, warning that any Pakistani national remaining beyond the deadline will be in violation of Indian immigration laws.
Adnan Sami, a formerly prominent figure in Pakistan’s music scene, relocated to India in the early 2000s and officially gained Indian citizenship in 2016. He has frequently voiced his appreciation for India, referring to his transition as his “destiny.”
This recent online disagreement showcases the continuing tensions between the two nations at both the diplomatic and cultural levels.
