In a landmark step toward modernizing Pakistan’s trade and customs operations, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the country’s first AI-powered Faceless Customs Assessment System in Karachi. This advanced platform represents a significant leap in digitizing the clearance of imported goods.
Faceless Customs to Eliminate Human Contact and Speed Up Processing
The newly implemented system uses artificial intelligence to remove human interaction from the customs clearance process. This not only reduces opportunities for bribery and corruption but also streamlines operations. Traders can now receive clearance decisions in as little as 15 minutes, with a maximum cap of 19 hours, drastically improving efficiency.
Transparent, Automated Clearance with Trained Officers Only
Only specially trained and thoroughly vetted officers are assigned to the faceless system. Strict policies are enforced, including restrictions on mobile usage and social media access at assessment terminals. The facility is also equipped with dedicated areas for breaks and prayer, ensuring staff well-being and productivity.
National Expansion Planned Following Karachi Success
Encouraged by the success of the Karachi launch, the Prime Minister has instructed the Federal Board of Revenue and Ministry of Information Technology to expand the system to major ports and cities across Pakistan. This nationwide rollout aims to make customs processes fully transparent, digital, and efficient.
Central Monitoring and Surveillance Infrastructure Introduced
To enhance oversight, a central control room will supervise the faceless customs operations. CCTV cameras, body cameras for field officers, and mobile signal jammers are being deployed across terminals to prevent tampering, ensure compliance, and strengthen accountability.
Track-and-Trace Integration for Smuggling Control
The AI-based customs reform is being supported by a comprehensive track-and-trace system, targeting high-risk sectors like tobacco, cement, sugar, and fertilizers. By monitoring goods from production to delivery, the system helps eliminate smuggling and improves tax recovery.
Reducing Importer Hassle and Boosting Trust in Trade
This initiative is designed to facilitate honest importers, cutting through red tape and eradicating discretionary power that often leads to extortion. The system promises a business-friendly environment, helping attract foreign investment and ensuring smoother trade flows.
Reform in Line With Economic Goals and Modernization Agenda
The Faceless Customs System aligns with Pakistan’s broader goal to modernize public institutions, integrate artificial intelligence into governance, and fulfill international digital trade standards. It reflects the country’s commitment to technology-driven transparency and economic transformation.
Path Forward: Smarter, Safer, and Faster Customs
With continuous upgrades, stakeholder training, and system integration, the government aims to establish a uniform national customs system that promotes ease of doing business, enhances public revenue, and positions Pakistan as a digitally competitive trade partner.
