Scaloni Yet to Decide on Messi’s Starting Role Against Chile

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, stated on Wednesday that a final decision regarding Lionel Messi’s inclusion in the starting lineup for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Chile is still pending. The coach is closely monitoring the 37-year-old captain’s fitness level.

Having already secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup, Argentina, who currently lead the South American qualifying table, are set to face Chile on Thursday. The team will be without several key players, and Messi’s participation remains uncertain.

“We have maintained contact with Messi recently. Whether he will start the match is still undecided. Assessing his physical condition is crucial,” Scaloni informed reporters.

“It’s evident that we can explore different options at this stage. In principle, he is available, and a final decision will be made later,” he added.

With several significant players unavailable due to injuries or suspensions, Scaloni views this as an opportunity to assess new talent ahead of their World Cup title defense next summer in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“We anticipate a number of absentees. If the players we call upon are fit and prepared, they will be given opportunities,” he mentioned.

“The starting eleven is yet to be finalized, but we intend to provide playing time to those who haven’t had many opportunities and whom we believe are ready,” Scaloni stated.

“While the result remains important, it is not our primary focus at this moment. Our priority is to integrate these players and provide them with valuable experience with the team.”

The coach, aged 47, emphasized that Argentina’s focus remains consistent, with a strong performance being the primary objective.

“We are eager to compete and assess other players, especially those who are performing well. Every match presents a valuable opportunity,” Scaloni remarked.

“It’s not as if national teams are overburdened with matches to the extent that we would decline this opportunity. On the contrary, we view it as a positive challenge. We are in a favorable position.”

Scaloni also commented on Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as the coach of Brazil, expressing his belief that the Italian will enhance the team’s capabilities.

“I think it is excellent. Ancelotti is among the premier coaches of recent times, and he will undoubtedly elevate Brazil’s profile,” Scaloni concluded.

“I admire his approach and everything about him. I anticipate his success and believe his presence will enrich the game. He is welcome, and I extend my best wishes to him.”
