Pakistan to Face Bangladesh in T20I Series in Lahore
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is anticipated to reveal the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh later this week, according to sources on Tuesday.
Originally, the series faced potential scheduling problems due to diplomatic tensions. Despite these initial hurdles, the matches are now confirmed to proceed in Pakistan.
These tensions also caused a short interruption of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.
PSL 10, initially slated to conclude on May 18, experienced a brief suspension but recommenced on May 17, with the final now scheduled for May 25.
Bangladesh was initially scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on May 21 in two groups for a five-match T20I series, with the first match planned for May 25 in Faisalabad.
Nevertheless, adjustments were made to the tour schedule, resulting in a revised three-match series due to logistical issues and evolving security conditions.
This agreement followed constructive talks between PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials, which included BCB Chairman Nazmul Abedeen and President Farooq Ahmed.
Following these fruitful discussions, both boards have consented to proceed with the tour, resolving prior uncertainties.
According to sources, the series is now scheduled to commence on May 27, with the subsequent two matches likely to be held with a one-day gap, concluding on May 31.
Regarding squad selection, sources previously indicated that the PCB has identified five strong candidates — comprising four experienced players and one emerging talent — for consideration in the upcoming series.
The players under consideration are Sahibzada Farhan, Hussain Talat, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, and young pacer Ali Raza.
Reportedly, the PCB is expected to persist with its recent strategy of evaluating emerging talent.
Consequently, prominent players such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi are unlikely to be included in the squad for this series.
Notably, Babar and Rizwan have not participated in a T20I match since December 2024.
In the meantime, all-rounder Salman Ali Agha will remain the team’s captain, having been appointed to the role for the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which Pakistan lost 4-1.
