CWI/WIPA Awards Gala to Celebrate West Indies Cricket Legends

Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) have announced the 8th annual CWI/WIPA Awards Gala. The event will take place on Sunday, June 22nd, at the historic Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle.

The gala is designed to celebrate the remarkable achievements of West Indies cricketers and also commemorate the 50th anniversary of their momentous 1975 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup victory.

Honoring the 1975 World Cup Champions

The 1975 West Indies team, under the leadership of Clive Lloyd, achieved an undefeated record throughout the tournament. They secured victories against Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka during the group stages, and triumphed over New Zealand in the semi-final.

In the final match against Australia, Clive Lloyd’s outstanding century, with a score of 102 runs, played a crucial role in establishing a competitive total of 291/8 in 60 overs.

During Australia’s innings, Ian Chappell made a promising start, but a series of three significant run-outs executed by Viv Richards changed the game’s direction.

Despite a determined effort from Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in a last-wicket partnership, Australia fell short by 17 runs, awarding the inaugural Men’s Cricket World Cup title to the West Indies.
